Protozoans Video I: Water Circus

Water Circus is a 17-minute program that introduces students to protozoans. Time is devoted to classifying protozoa, contrasting them to the metazoa and illustrating their relative size and habit. Four types of protozoa are identified including Amoeba, Paramecium, Peranema, and Volvox. The various means of locomotion and methods of obtaining or producing food are illustrated. These organisms are also compared to some common pond water animals, similar to rotifers.

Protozoans Video II: In the Eye of the Needle

In the Eye of the Needle is a 25-minute presentation that takes a more in-depth look at protozoans. The micrometer, a metric measuring unit, is introduced, and twenty different protozoans are identified along with their corresponding sizes. The speed of a Paramecium is determined and a number of cell parts and organelles of various protozoa are identified. The video teaches about the springlike myoneme on the Vorticella, the cirri of Euplotes, chloroplasts in teh Euglena, and water expelling vesicles in a Paramecium. You will also see a variety of different shaped nuclei. In the Eye of the Needle reveals everything from the tiny cell in a Volvox colony to the giant amoeba, Pelomyxa.

Protozoans Video III: Wonder Down Under

The Wonder Down Under video is a 24-minute program that covers the food chain with an emphasis on the interrelationship between producers, consumers, scavengers and decomposers. Watch as protozoa attach swarms of bacteria, a Didinium devours a Paramecia, and the scavenger Paranema works inside the body of a dead rotifer! Ewwwwww! Students will love these scenes! See reproduction in action and learn about the distinction between fission and conjugation. Watch the last thread of protoplasm snap as one Amoebasplits and becomes two.
